The Rev. Dr. Eric Kimball Hinds, Rector

Fr. Eric arrived at St. Matthew’s in August of 2007 after serving as rector at St. Peter’s, Mountain Lakes, New Jersey for nine years. Born in New York City, Eric is a cradle Episcopalian who as a boy attended St. Philip’s Church, Garrison, New York located in the midst of the scenic Hudson River Valley. Fr. Eric earned his Master of Science degree from Syracuse University. He taught Middle and High School science at two different schools and completed a two year stint as a carpenter before attending The General Theological Seminary in New York City, where he was awarded his Master of Divinity degree in 1994.

With a science, history, and theology background; and parents who were artists (ceramics & ballet)—Fr. Eric has an eclectic range of interests which informs his preaching and teaching. Fr. Eric has traveled extensively with his family including a month long clergy exchange program in England. His trips to the Holy Land have enriched his ministry and teaching. Numerous visits to England, Scotland and Ireland have informed Fr. Eric’s interest in Celtic Christianity. Fr. Eric recently completed his Doctor of Ministry Degree in preaching from the University of the South, Sewanee.

The Rev. Jay Sapaen Watan, Associate Rector

Fr. Jay started as Associate Rector at St. Matthew’s in the fall of 2018. As a priest of the Church, he is passionate about creating communities that honor the soul, connect to truth, and invite the experience of God’s unconditional love. HIs lifelong spiritual themes center on discovering possibilities; living faith in action; cultivating wholeness and joy; and embracing moments with courage and a humble heart.

Previously, he served twelve years as the youth minister and school chaplain at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Foster City, CA. Fr. Jay’s professional experience includes education, law enforcement, and military service. Presently, he serves as the Lower School’s religion teacher at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School, and as a chaplain in the United States Army Reserves.

Fr. Jay was ordained in 2006 in the Diocese of California by the Rt. Rev. William E. Swing. He completed undergraduate studies at San Francisco State University, majoring in Inter-Disciplinary Social Science with a minor in Asian-American Studies, and earned a Masters of Divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA.

He lives in the Outer Mission District of San Francisco with his family and dog. Some of Fr. Jay’s many interests include: family time, traveling to world heritage sites, service projects, ukulele, Igorot Gangsa, drums, photography, church architecture, and food adventures, making road trips in a good car, San Francisco Giants Baseball and Golden State Warriors Basketball.
