Music Ministry
Music is an integral part of worship at St. Matthew’s. Each service incorporates congregational hymns in the Episcopal tradition, accompanied by our lovely 1937 Aeolian Skinner pipe organ, which is also heard in the prelude and postlude music.
Organist Philip Keil plays an organ and bell medley in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Philip Keil, Director of Music & Church Organist
Philip has been playing pipe organ since the age of 15. By the time he was 19, he had captured his first professional position, in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. Simultaneously, he was active musically at the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to study at the Julliard School, and assume various music positions in New York City, then San Francisco, before his first major appointment as organist and choir master at the Episcopal Church in Berkeley. From 1976 to 1990 he served as organist and choir master here at St. Matthew’s, where he was responsible for five parish choirs involving more than 100 singers; directed a concert series; taught choir and music appreciation weekly for Grades 3-8 at the Day School; produced biennial school musicals; played organ for five regular weekly services; and administered all aspects of the music program. An extended sabbatical of several years, Philip was invited in 2003 to return as our parish organist.
