The Vestry of the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew is the body of twelve lay parishioners responsible for the management of the parish.

Elected from the congregation, four people are elected to the group each year for a three year term. The executive committee of the Vestry is elected each year by the Vestry to lead itself. The Sr. Warden is selected by the Rector.

Committed to transparency and accountability to the parish, St. Matthew’s Vestry members are visible at Coffee Hour and church events and play a critical role in the life of the parish.

Gary Perkins
Sr. Warden

Gary has been a member of St. Matthew’s for over 30 years. He joined because of the welcoming support of its parishioners and its atmosphere of honest and the friendly people. From his early days at St. Matthew’s, Gary has participated in various initiatives, including fundraising for KQED and providing guidance on accepting donated computers. In more recent times, he has proudly served as an Usher during the 8 AM services, led the Sacred Ground Sessions as a group leader, and represented our community as a delegate to both the Episcopal Convention and the Bishop Selection election.

Gary’s background as an Industrial and Systems Engineer with an MBA, coupled with his experience as a retired College Professor, Dean, and Chief Information Officer for the Peralta College District, has shaped his ability to manage people, budgets, and overcome challenges. For the past four years, he has also had the privilege of serving as the President of his homeowners' association at his condominium. As we look to the future, Gary would like to participate in St. Matthew’s plans for growth and extending its positive influence in the neighboring community. Beyond St. Matthew’s, Gary enjoys watching football and is an active golfer.

Jr. Warden

Tom has come to our congregation with both clinical and leadership experience.

For 35 years he was in private medical practice in San Mateo and Burlingame as a

cardiologist and internist. He recently retired as Chair, Department of Medicine, at

John has been a member of St Matthew’s congregation since 1992. His sister, Sarah Darby and family, who attended for years, introduced John and his wife to St Matthew’s, but they soon after moved to Los Altos.

John and his wife Barb have been married for 46 years. They met as freshmen at Cal and have three daughters and four grandchildren all of whom live in the Bay Area. They have lived in the same San Mateo house since 1992.

John is a retired airline pilot of 34 years and is also a Naval Reserve retiree. A significant amount John’s time was spent at sea aboard the USS Enterprise as he made two extended deployments throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans. Transitioning to a career as an airline pilot, and excepting a four year span in Minnesota, John and his family were able to remain in San Mateo as he commuted to airline pilot bases.

His layovers took him to cities around the country where he enjoyed attending services at a variety of Episcopal churches. He enjoyed these services but St.  Matthew’s always felt the best with its wonderful combination of the Church itself, the clergy, and the congregation, and the tranquility the worship brings.

He currently serves as an usher and spends much of his free time with grandchildren.

Troy Pesutich
Vestry member

Approximately 22 years ago, Troy slipped into the back of St. Matthew’s attending his very first Episcopal service. Growing up Lutheran in Petaluma, California, he enjoyed hearing the familiar liturgy and hymns he grew up with but have since been abandoned in many Lutheran churches like the one he grew up in. Although he spent that first year or two at St. Matthew’s being very quiet, coming and going each Sunday, slowly he found a growing connection to a small group of parishioners. What started as a quiet, soul fulfilling, and contemplative part of his week grew to include the community and all that makes St. Matthew’s what it is: a group of individuals, families and clergy who share a mutual love for our beautiful church, all contributing their own acts of love to make our church the special place that it is. Troy’s own acts of love for St. Matthew’s began when he was asked to join the Altar Guild nearly 10 years ago. Never did he expect that this service to our church would turn out to be the most fulfilling.  Learning about and caring for our sacred liturgical vessels, as well as preparing for the Eucharist, has drawn Troy closer to his faith and the rhythms and meanings of the church year.  He also has the honor of serving as an acolyte, which has only increased his love for our church. Whether preparing for or serving on those high feast days with glorious triumphant music, or the simplicity and beautiful language of our 8 a.m. service (his favorite), Troy counts his blessings to be a part of the beauty and splendor of our church. As a teacher, Troy finds that he does not have much in the way of “treasure” from the proverbial “time, talent, and treasure” calling.  However, he contributes in all the ways he can, and the next step of serving on the Vestry means that he can do his part so St. Matthew’s can continue to be the church we all love.Outside of St. Matthew’s, Troy has been a 5th Grade teacher in South San Francisco for the last 28 years. The job has changed in countless unforgiving ways, but he still loves the kids and thanks them for keeping him young. He enjoys traveling and buying more books than he will ever read; his dog, Hugo, is his hobby. Upon retirement, Troy envisions a quiet, sleepy village in Croatia
